VA Aid and Attendance: help paying for care

Veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities may qualify for a VA pension with Aid and Attendance, an added monthly amount that can go toward care at home. The 2026 VA maximums with Aid and Attendance are $29,093 a year (about $2,424 a month) for a veteran with no dependents and $34,488 a year (about $2,874 a month) for a veteran with a spouse. The actual payment is the maximum minus countable income, and unreimbursed care costs can lower countable income. Many families who qualify have never applied.

General eligibility

• The veteran served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a wartime period (World War II, Korea, Vietnam era or Gulf War)
• The veteran was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
• The veteran is 65 or older, or has a permanent and total disability. Surviving spouses may also qualify.
• Income and net worth are within VA limits
• Help is needed with everyday activities such as bathing, dressing or eating, or the person is bedridden
